Let’s Demystify Psychotherapy Together | FAQs

Your Guide into Therapy

  • We collaborate together to understand and address your emotional needs, thoughts and behaviors in a safe and supportive environment. We can look at developing healthier narratives, perspectives and thought patterns. We work on making meaningful changes while over-time, fostering self-worth, emotional resilience and personal growth.

  • It is completely reasonable to be nervous about therapy. During our consultation, I can explain how therapy works, and we can set clear expectations, goals, and small steps that you feel comfortable to take during your mental health journey.

As we start seeing each other, we will develop what is called a ‘therapeutic relationship’, meaning we develop a professional bond that serves as a safe and effective connection for therapy. It's built on trust, respect, empathy, and collaboration, allowing you to feel safe and understood as you explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The quality of this relationship is a significant predictor of therapeutic success, as it enables you to feel comfortable sharing and confronting challenges, fostering personal growth and healing. This connection is collaborative, with me guiding but not dictating, empowering you to set goals, make choices, and gain insights at you own pace.

  • Therapy can give you a safe space to talk openly, without judgment, about what you are going through. With the support of a psychotherapist, you can start to understand why you feel the way you do and explore the deeper roots behind your struggles.

Beyond just talking, therapy helps you develop practical strategies for navigating challenges, improving relationships, and finding balance. Over time, it empowers you to heal, grow, and make positive changes in your life, so you can move forward with more clarity and confidence.

  • Therapeutic approaches are a set of specific principles, techniques, and theoretical frameworks that cater to different aspects of psychological well-being. The variety of modalities exist because people have diverse needs, personalities and experiences, therefore what may work for one person may not work for another. Each approach offers a unique lens for understanding and treating individuals, giving therapists the flexibility to tailor their approach to meet the client's specific needs.

  • A safe space is an environment—both physical and emotional—where you can feel secure, accepted, and free from judgment. It’s a setting where you can express yourself openly, exploring thoughts and feelings without fear of being criticized, shamed, or invalidated. Key aspects of a safe space include; a non-judgmental attitude, confidentiality, validation and empathy, predictable session structure, accountability and boundaries, and respect for autonomy.

  • Through therapy, you gain self-awareness, emotional regulation skills, and better communication strategies, which can improve the quality of your interactions with those around you. You might learn to set healthier boundaries, express yourself more assertively, or let go of patterns that previously led to conflict or misunderstandings. Therapy can also help you recognize and address unhelpful dynamics in your relationships, fostering healthier connections with family, friends, and romantic partners.
